File Description: mspfilt.dll
mspfilt.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file known as the Microsoft Search Persistent Filter or Media Source Protocol Filter. It is a core component of the Windows operating system, primarily utilized by the Windows Search Service and Internet Information Services (IIS). Its main function is to index, filter, and process specific file content so that the system can quickly return search results.
Standard File Location
The authentic file is always located in the Windows system directories:
- 64-bit Windows (and 32-bit systems):
C:\Windows\System32\mspfilt.dll - 64-bit Windows (32-bit compatibility copy):
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mspfilt.dll
Note: If you find this file located outside of the Windows folder subdirectories, it could potentially be malware camouflaging itself under a legitimate name.
How to Fix mspfilt.dll Errors Without Downloading
DLL errors usually occur because the file is corrupted, deleted by an overaggressive antivirus, or de-registered during a system update. Never download individual DLL files from third-party websites, as they often contain malware or outdated versions.
Use these built-in Windows utilities to repair the file safely:
1. Run the System File Checker (SFC)
The SFC tool scans all protected system files and automatically replaces corrupted or missing files with an official cached copy.
- Press the Windows Key, type
cmd, and right-click Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
sfc /scannow - Wait for the scan to reach 100%. Restart your computer.
2. Run the DISM Tool
If the SFC tool cannot find the cached replacement file, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool will fetch a fresh copy directly from official Microsoft update servers.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator (same as step 1 above).
- Type the following command and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Allow the process to complete (it may appear stuck at times; this is normal).
- Run
sfc /scannowone more time after DISM finishes, then restart your PC.
3. Re-register the DLL File
