How to Fix BCDBoot.exe Errors Without Downloading Anything

BCDBoot errors usually mean your computer cannot find or load the Windows boot configuration data. You can fix this entirely by using the built-in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

Step 1: Access the Command Prompt

You need to access the command line before Windows boots up.

  1. Restart your PC.
  2. Press the advanced startup key repeatedy. This is usually F8, F11, or Shift + Restart.
  3. Navigate to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

Step 2: Identify Your Drive Letters

The drive letters in the recovery environment often differ from regular Windows.

  1. Type diskpart and press Enter.
  2. Type list volume and press Enter.
  3. Look for two specific volumes:
    • Your Windows OS partition (usually the largest one, look for the letter).
    • Your Boot partition (usually labeled System, ESP, or formatted as FAT32 for UEFI, or NTFS for Legacy).
  4. Note both drive letters.
  5. Type exit and press Enter to leave Diskpart.

Step 3: Run the BCDBoot Repair Command

Now you will rebuild the boot configuration files using the native tool already on your drive.

For UEFI Systems (Most Modern PCs)

If your boot partition uses the FAT32 file system, run this command (replace C: with your Windows letter and S: with your boot partition letter):

  • bcdboot C:\Windows /s S: /f UEFI

For Legacy/BIOS Systems (Older PCs)

If your system uses a standard NTFS boot partition, run this command (replace C: with your Windows letter):

  • bcdboot C:\Windows /s C: /f BIOS

Step 4: Verify and Restart

  1. The command line should output: Boot files successfully created.
  2. Type exit to close the prompt.
  3. Click Continue to boot into Windows.
