Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.Diagnostics.dll Guide

File Description

This file is a legitimate system component of the Microsoft PowerShell framework. It contains the core cmdlets and infrastructure required for diagnostic and logging functions within PowerShell, such as managing event logs, performance counters, and system diagnostics.

Standard File Location

The file is natively located within the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) or the .NET assembly folders. The specific path depends on your PowerShell version:

  • Windows PowerShell (Built-in v5.1): C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC MSIL\Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.Diagnostics\
  • PowerShell 7+ (Core): C:\Program Files\PowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.Diagnostics.dll

How to Fix Errors Without Downloading the File

Downloading individual DLL files from third-party sites poses severe security risks. Use these built-in Windows tools to repair the file safely.

1. Run SFC (System File Checker)

SFC scans your system for corrupted or missing Windows files and restores them automatically from a local cached copy.

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type the following command and press Enter:
    sfc /scannow
  4. Wait for the process to hit 100% and restart your computer.

2. Run DISM Tool

If SFC cannot fix the issue, the DISM tool repairs the underlying Windows image using Windows Update components.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once completed, run the sfc /scannow command one more time.

3. Re-enable PowerShell via Windows Features

If the PowerShell module registration is broken, toggling the Windows feature can re-register the DLLs.

  1. Press Windows Key + R, type optionalfeatures, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to find Windows PowerShell.
  3. Uncheck the box next to it and click OK (this uninstalls/deactivates it).
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Open Windows Features again, check the box for Windows PowerShell, and click OK to reinstall it.

4. Update or Repair .NET Framework

Since PowerShell relies heavily on the .NET runtime, repairing .NET can fix assembly errors.

  1. Download and run the official Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool.
  2. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  3. Find your .NET Desktop Runtime, click the three dots, select Modify, and choose Repair.
