How to Fix BOOTMGR Error Without Downloading Anything

A "BOOTMGR is missing" or corrupt error means your computer cannot find the sector containing the Windows launch files. You can fix this using built-in Windows tools without downloading external software.

Method 1: Run Startup Repair

Windows has a built-in self-healing utility that automatically detects and fixes boot manager errors.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Press the advanced boot key (F8, F11, or Shift while restarting) to open the Advanced Startup Options menu.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Click Advanced options.
  5. Choose Startup Repair.
  6. Select your user account and let Windows scan and repair the system.

Method 2: Manually Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD)

If automatic repair fails, you can rebuild the boot sector manually using the Command Prompt.

  1. Navigate back to the Advanced options menu using the steps above.
  2. Click on Command Prompt.
  3. Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
  4. Type exit and press Enter.
  5. Restart your PC.

Method 3: Change the Boot Order in BIOS/UEFI

Sometimes this error occurs because the computer is trying to boot from a non-bootable drive, like a USB flash drive or external hard drive left plugged in.

  1. Unplug all external USB drives, memory cards, and external hard drives.
  2. Restart your PC and repeatedly press the BIOS key (F2, F12, Del, or Esc).
  3. Navigate to the Boot tab using your arrow keys.
  4. Move your primary hard drive (where Windows is installed) to the #1 position in the boot priority list.
  5. Save and exit (usually F10).

To narrow down the best solution, let me know:

  • What version of Windows are you running?
  • Did this error happen after a specific event (like a Windows update or dropping the laptop)?
  • Can you access the Advanced Startup Options screen, or is the computer completely stuck on the black error screen?
